Passage Experience, a Swarovski Entertainment project, is based on the short film Passage (2009), which was directed by Shekhar Kapur.
Swarovski Entertainment is dedicated to promoting new interpretations and expressions of crystalline myths, legends and symbols in the arts, and thus understands crystal not only literally – i.e. as jewellery, accessories and décor – but also metaphorically, as a catalyst for creativity and source of inspiration for artists.
Shekhar Kapur took an earnest approach to giving a new meaning to crystalline visions. Thus, in his first short film, he treats crystal as a kaleidoscope of storytelling by exploring non-linearity in film and leaving interpretation to viewers.
Kapur's openness to other forms of art led not only to Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman’s magnificent score, but also to a transformation of the film into a walk-in installation designed by David Adjaye. «Sankalpa» can be experienced at Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens, Austria until February 2010.
A Night of Passage, staged in Venice on 6 September 2009, adds a new layer to the multifaceted Passage. Whereas «Sankalpa» explores the spatial dimension of Kapur's film – its mirrorings, reflections and dreamlike images – the Venice show focuses on the film's temporal aspect underlined by the prominent role music plays in it.
Passage invites to ever new and changing interpretations, it offers a kaleidoscope of meanings and is therefore not only to be watched but turns into a multisensory Experience.
